Independent magazines are having their strangest decade yet. Print runs are smaller, prices are higher and readers are more devoted than ever. People don’t buy them to be informed. They buy them to be somewhere else for an hour.

A magazine is a room you can close the door on.

Paper also changes how we write. You cannot fix a typo after the press runs, so you read your sentences three times. You cut the filler. You choose.

PAPER STATIC exists online because that is where you are. But everything here is written as if it will one day be printed, folded and left on a train for a stranger to find.
